OUR VISION

Illuminating the Future Through Bold Stories

In Cannes, world capital of cinema and cradle of timeless elegance, the World Film Festival in Cannes - Remember the Future weaves a poetic celebration where art, technology, and the dreams of a sustainable world intertwine. As discreet pioneers, we reveal hidden treasures alongside creators, filmmakers, the international press, visionary partners, and prestigious brands sharing our vision.

Together, we light up fireflies of hope – bold films, connected minds – to weave an inclusive, vibrant, and meaningful future.

A Worldwide Avant-Garde Mission

Driven by our mantra "Remember the Future®", we transform cinema into a laboratory of bold ideas, merging memory and anticipation. Our monthly & annual online competition, along with our monthly "Best of Future" events in iconic Cannes venues, offer a dynamic stage where creators share powerful works, engage through the Audience Award, and co-create within a borderless community. The Luciole d'Or, an emblem of illumination, crowns films that transcend time and dare to question and shape an inspired future.

The Golden Firefly (Luciole d'Or): Visionary Muse and Ambassador of the Future

Much more than a trophy, the Golden Firefly (Luciole d'Or) is the luminous muse of the World Film Festival in Cannes, a dazzling symbol of hope, audacity, and renewal. Designed by Karolina Bomba and crafted from gold-plated metal, it holds a phosphorescent star that shines in the dark — a unique innovation in the world of film festivals. This light becomes a poetic metaphor for our mission: to illuminate creators in the shadows and reveal stories that dare to light up the future.

A true avant-garde spark of the World Film Festival in Cannes and bearer of a future-oriented perspective, the Luciole d'Or's mission is to discover rare gems and unveil a New Generation of emerging talents, as well as a Future Wave of filmmakers deserving greater visibility and recognition.

But the Luciole d'Or does not stop at its static form. In 2022, its animated character was developed by director Michel Rousseau, using 3D creation software and artificial intelligence. This hybrid work gave birth to about 20 immersive animations, screened during our monthly projections, making the festival experience more vivid, interactive, and sensory.

Faithful to our pioneering spirit, the Luciole d'Or has also become the first film festival mascot presented as a hologram, embodying the festival's identity on stage and accompanying our ceremonies as a true futuristic master of ceremonies.

It embodies the very essence of our commitment: a fusion between poetry, innovation, technology, and Cannes elegance, lighting up the future of cinema with audacity, humility, and imagination.

A Platform for Inclusion and Visionary Exploration

With nearly 190 categories, we embrace all voices – short and feature films, documentaries, experimental works, music, scripts, animations, music videos – without distinction of budget. We celebrate every creator with a passion for stories that address planetary challenges: human rights, social justice, ecology, diversity.

Artificial Intelligence: A Creative Revolution Born in Cannes

Just as the Steadicam liberated the camera, digital special effects opened up infinite universes, and lightweight cameras democratized filmmaking, we explore artificial intelligence as a creative partner in its own right. Guided by rigorous ethics, AI becomes a powerful ally to amplify human imagination, paving the way for innovative, immersive, and responsible narratives.

Since 2020, the World Film Festival in Cannes has been the first festival on the French Riviera, in Cannes, in Europe, and in the world to introduce and award a category specifically dedicated to films made with the help of artificial intelligence: Best Artificial Intelligence Film.

This pioneering distinction recognizes works created entirely or partially with AI, in full compliance with the international legal framework, particularly concerning copyright, image rights, and artistic integrity.

We believe that AI, when used with consciousness and creativity, can not replace humans, but augment them — revealing new forms of storytelling, opening up unprecedented doors to the collective imagination, and pushing, once again, the boundaries of cinema.

An Intergenerational Stage, a Global Voice

The World Film Festival in Cannes is honored to have awarded films featuring exceptional personalities, such as Clint Eastwood, Jane Goodall, Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Kate Bush, Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop, Yoko Ono, Neil Young, S.H. Le Dalaï Lama, Sir Richard Branson, Jennifer Lopez, Debbie Harry, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, Jon Voight, Malcolm McDowell, Deepak Chopra, Mickey Rourke, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland, John Waters, Chaka Khan, Billy Gibbons, Eric Roberts, Priscilla Presley, Tippi Hedren, David Lachapelle, Michael Madsen, Anita Ekberg, Lance Henriksen, Jeff Daniels, Lindsay Wagner, Luc Besson, Lambert Wilson, Béatrice Dalle, Denis Lavant, John Taylor, among many others.

Some of these figures have been crowned with Oscars®, BAFTA®s, Golden Globes®, or distinctions like the Nobel Peace Prize or the Templeton Prize, recognizing their contributions to art, science, and humanitarianism.

By celebrating both these icons and emerging talents, our festival weaves a dialogue between generations, amplifying universal stories that resonate globally. In this spirit, we invite everyone to co-write the future of cinema.

Our Disruptive DNA • The Power of Fireflies

In a landscape where some institutions conjure up events with dizzying budgets, instant visibility, and strategic alliances, we weave our vision with patience, authenticity, and conviction.

It also happens that they draw inspiration — without ever acknowledging it — from the silent creativity of those they overshadow. While original ideas are born on the fringes, they are sometimes picked up, standardized, amplified… and then resold as revolutions.
They reproduce uniform and inaccessible models, and the media spotlight they monopolize leaves little room for fragile but essential glimmers.

We have chosen another path.
That of stepping aside. That of a festival that does not conform to dominant codes, but which lends an ear to discreet voices, supports audacious creators, and offers a stage to those who are not always invited to the table of the powerful.
Facing these well-oiled mechanisms, we have chosen another tempo: that of sincerity, emergence, and fertile slowness.

In a world saturated with images, logos, and slogans, we choose poetry, discussions, and to resonate through time.
Defending the unprecedented. Celebrating emergence. Protecting the margins.

Here, we don’t shout louder — we illuminate differently.
And sometimes, a firefly illuminates more lastingly than a fireworks display.

OUR STORY

The Genesis of a Bold Festival

Born during the second lockdown of 2020 on the French Riviera, the World Film Festival in Cannes – Remember the Future is the fruit of a bold dream. Its founder and president, Karolina Bomba, a filmmaker and visionary, faced the same challenges as artists worldwide: cancellations, isolation, uncertainty.

After submitting her short film “Seven Wishes” to international festivals, despite its accolades, the pandemic silenced encounters, shut down cinemas, and labeled culture as “non-essential,” bringing it to a halt. In that silence, a spark was lit — the desire to create a space where voices from around the world could continue to resonate.

In a world turned upside down, Karolina observed that the fights for social justice, the environment, and human rights, far from fading away, needed to be heard more than ever. She quickly understood that cinema and art were precisely what the world needed most — to heal, to dream, and to keep moving forward.

From this realization was born a hybrid festival, both monthly and annual, a beacon for creatorsfilmmakers, scriptwriters, musicians – united by stories that challenge, inspire, and enlighten.

Facing the crisis, exacerbated social tensions, and pervasive injustice, our festival took root in a spirit of creative, humanist, and universal resistance.

At a time when other cultural events struggle to overcome elitist barriers, our ambition is clear: to widely uplift or showcase emerging talents, those unknown artists who bring a fresh and essential perspective.

In just a few years, the World Film Festival in Cannes has become an international benchmark for emerging talents, with over 2500 awarded films and a global audience. More than 130 nationalities represented. Over 7,000 participants in the competition.

Our Festival is a catalyst for change and renewal, spreading a powerful message of hope, joy, and poetry. With 190 categories, each month, hundreds of creators from around the world express themselves freely and inspire a new cultural paradigm.

A festival to co-create a better world – a story both personal and collective

Far from being limited to the crisis that saw its birth, our festival is a call to action.
Each submission is a firefly, each screening a step toward a brighter future.
Join us to celebrate cinema, music, words, and life, in a global celebration where every voice counts.

Because every story matters.
Every voice deserves to be heard.
Together we are writing the future of cinema.
