Mashup Cinémi.A French Touch 2025
The “French Touch” label brings together films by French directors selected for Season 8 of the Mashup Film Festival. Showcasing the best of French creativity, this program includes both mashup films and so-called “AI films”—works in which the visuals and animations are crafted through a synergy between artificial intelligence and human creative input. Mashup Cinema and AI Cinema (Cinémi.A) are both rebellious offspring of the digital revolution. They share a common mindset: remixing and DIY spirit.
Indeed, these cinematic movements assert that every new creation is a recomposition of pre-existing works—if not visually, then conceptually. In mashup films, references are explicitly visible; in AI films, the creative process begins with training data sets provided by Gen AI tools.
Mashup filmmakers and cinémi.astes are solitary creators who prefer editing tables to film sets. Their approach is closer to that of a painter or a solo musician than a traditional film director. They take on writing, video editing, sound design, color grading, mixing, and sometimes voice acting and music composition—alone. They often choose to create without waiting for funding, even if it means working with minimal resources. Their connection to audiences is direct, but often limited to online distribution.
Gen AI tools have improved significantly in just a few years, offering a new level of sophistication and control that allows for the development of real storytelling and opens new doors for filmmakers. We are witnessing the first steps of this new way of creating in dialogue with machines. It is up to human intelligence and sensitivity to identify the seeds and embryonic ideas generated by these machine-tools, nurture them, combine them, refine them, and shape them into expressions that reflect the soul of the creator learning their language.
And in this dialogue, where imagination meets algorithms, French creatives are leading the way. Fiction, animation, experimental… all genres are explored in this double selection—an exciting glimpse into one of cinema’s possible futures.
